Coaches Corner

Kerry

Kerry’s tip of the month:

Dear Members,

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Kerry and I’ve been lucky enough to be hired on at your club to run the instructional programming. I wanted to thank the board for giving me this opportunity. I’ve been coaching tennis for 40 years. For the last eight years I’ve been the Head Pro over at the Sir Winston Churchill Tennis Club. I look forward to getting to know all of you this coming season.

This being my first coaches corner my first tip for the season, which helped me a lot as a player over the years, is to watch the pros whenever you can, either live or on TV. Your brain can absorb images and rhythms without you even being conscious of doing it. Your brain will help you naturally mimic the movements on the tennis court. I always tell people watch and enjoy tennis don’t analyze it. By analyzing it consciously it stops the natural learning your brain does through imagery.

I suspect, like me, we were all glued to the TV watching the great Australian Open final between Federer and Nadal. As a fan and a tennis player you couldn’t ask for a better match. The fight and athleticism that they both showed was amazing!!

If you haven’t seen it watch it on YouTube and if you have, watch it again. It will help your body train itself to move and hit better on the court.
